Well, it's almost official at this point, we've bought a camper! After being constantly disappointed with U-Haul, especially experiencing some of the worst customer service imaginable I set forth to find alternatives to this terrible company. Unfortunately it seems they hold a stranglehold monopoly on enclosed rental trailers. Sure, plenty of people have trucks they're willing to let you rent, but not trailers.
To make a long, and frankly rather unremarkable, story short after probing eBay we found a small, vintage camper trailer for a great price! It's an adorable little teardrop shaped thing, a little rough around the edges, but then again so are all of us trailblazers. Jared and I are trekking upstate tomorrow to hopefully pick it up and tow her down to Pennsylvania where it get a little bit of a tune-up before the really big trip.
Now, I'm a bit of a dork, and certainly a sucker for nice little nod to other people's art. Pre-trail required reading for all of us has been John Steinbeck's "Travel's with Charley," which if you have not read it, please do. In deference to this definitive novel on traversing the American countryside we've decided to call our little camper Rocinante. I think it's a fitting name and with me it takes a more personal meaning. Before they passed my mother and step-father meant to travel the United States, first by boat, and when that didn't pan out, by RV. The name they always wanted for these was also Rocinante. With all of that in our minds and hearts we christen our little camper as we continue to prepare to hit the dusty trail. That is of course assuming we are successful tomorrow. Keep you fingers crossed!
That's funny, my dog is named after the Charley in "Travels" too :). Such an influential little book.
