Today the full reality of actually leaving is finally starting to sink in. After a small intimate breakfast Christie and I set forth on the beginning of this trek alone. The past week or so, I believe, has really shown all of us the full price we're paying for making this journey. Leaving everyone we love on this coast, not to mention New York, is something I don't think any of us, certainly myself were fully prepared for. That said, as we set off my organs seemed all confused. The nervous excitement I expected to feel from my stomach had been strangely replaced by a rather heavy heart. I think Sam was mostly to blame... his last wave goodbye from the steps of our brownstone was a little to much...
After far to long struggling across city street Christie and I emerged into the much more open part of the state that is Long Island. Now I'd only ever been out to Long Island once, and my memory is filled mostly with strip malls and overly decorated homes. As we sped (and I do mean sped) out towards the Hamptons, I've expected pretty much more of that. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to find mostly trees and smaller roads. I imagine like most people, my image of "The Hamptons" mostly revolved around celebrities throwing impossibly large parties in mansions that could have encompassed my entire block in New York. I'm happy to say it was refreshing that most of Long Island in no way brought those images to mind.
After a couple of hours driving and making sure to keep of our little menagerie content in their own parts of the car we arrived at the home of Christie's cousin and her husband, Mara and Roni. First let me say thank you to the two of them for being incredibly gracious hosts. They're currently raising an adorable 4 month old, Maya, their first, and between her, work and being members of the best, as Mara put it, Samba-Rock-World-Groove band that I've ever heard, they're a bit sleep deprived. If you ever get the chance they're called the Bastards of Boom and they know to put on a damn good show.
After seeing them play things get a little fuzzy for me... At this point I'm running on not nearly enough sleep and the car ride back from the gig saw me passing out on Christie's shoulder and getting way too much drool on her sleeve... Tomorrow will see us leaving this quaint little part of Long Island (sadly far too soon for my tastes) to meet up with more of Christie's family in Connecticut before continuing further westward. The best part will be that we get to travel by boat! Until next time weary travelers.
Oh, and before I can get, the best of today's photography can be found here. (Sorry, I don't know enough HTML to make it all work here on the blog itself, so for now this will have to do.)
